Step by Step Installation of Symantec Backup Exec 10d Windows Servers:

Solution


To install Backup Exec 10d , refer to the following steps:
Before starting the installation process, it is recommended to run the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Environment Check utility. Refer the Related Documents section of this TechNote

Backup Exec for Windows Servers Environment Check is a new feature which is introduced in Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers. It is recommended to select and run this utility from the installation program before Backup Exec is installed. This utility checks for the following:
· Minimum requirements for installation
· Compatible versions of required components
· Previous versions of Backup Exec and Backup Exec options
· Operational storage devices and correct drivers
· Use of Backup Exec ports by third-party software

Depending upon the outcome of the environmental check, one can proceed with the installation process as mentioned below:

1. Run Browser.exe, which is located in the installation CD or in the extracted folder

2. The Backup Exec 10d   for Windows Servers screen appears (Figure 1).

3. Read the License Agreement, select I accept the terms of the license agreement, and click Next to continue with the installation  (Figure 2).

4. Select Local Install, and then select Install Backup Exec software and options (Figure 3)

Additionally, Remote Install can be selected so that Remote Agent for Windows Server and Options can be pushed to remote systems.
5.  Listed below are the installation versions one can select from:
a. Evaluation: To install Backup Exec in Evaluation Mode for 60 days, leave the Serial Number field empty, and click Next to continue (Figure 4)

b. Licensed: To install a licensed version of Backup Exec, insert the Product Activation Code in the Serial Number field, click Add, and then click Next to continue (Figure 4).

The serial numbers can be imported (see the Related Documents section of this Tech note).

6. Based on the serial number entered, various pre-selected options will be displayed (Figure 5).

Options with the red X indicate that these options will not be installed, as the serial number is not entered.

The destination folder can be changed if needed. The default destination folder is <SystemDrive>\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec.

7. It is recommended to give the Backup Exec Service Account (BESA) a Domain user account belonging to the Domain Admins and Local Administrators groups. Insert the domain user account to be used for the Backup Exec services. If the account does not exist, Backup Exec will create it and add it to the Domain Admins and Local Administrators groups and the Logon as a Service right. Click Next to continue with the installation of the Backup Exec services.  (Figure 6)

The following rights are granted to BESA:

a. Logon as a service
b. Act as a part of the operating system
c. Create a token object

Click  OK to continue with the installation of the Backup Exec services

8. The process provides an option to install the latest VERITAS drivers (Figure 7)

9.The Backup Exec installation overview is displayed (Figure 8)

This can be printed, or can be modified by clicking Back. This is also saved under <Drive:>\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\ as InstallReview.htm if the install is successful.

10.Click Install to begin the installation (Figure 9)

Once the installation is successful, the following options are displayed (Figure 10):
· Run the VERITAS Online Registration Wizard after system restarts
· View ReadMe after system restarts
· Create desktop shortcut
· Restart system

It is recommended to select all the options, and then click Finish (Figure 10) to complete the installation process.
