How to extend the Windows Server 2008 evaluation period

SUMMARY: -
This article describes how to extend, or re-arm, the Windows Server 2008 evaluation period. The evaluation period is also known as the "activation grace" period. These instructions apply to any edition of Windows Server 2008. This includes evaluation copies.

INTRODUCTION :- valuating Windows Server 2008 software does not require product activation. Any edition of Windows Server 2008 may be installed without activation, and it may be evaluated for 60 days. Additionally, the 60-day evaluation period may be reset (re-armed) three times. This action extends the original 60-day evaluation period by up to 180 days for a total possible evaluation time of 240 days.

Note In the Windows Server 2008 Evaluation DVD package, there is a 120-day initial evaluation period. You can extend the evaluation period to 240 days. To extend the initial evaluation and testing period, follow the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

With Surface tablet, Microsoft breaks tradition

Summary: The company announces pair of Microsoft-branded “Surface” tablets running Windows 8 and Windows RT at long-awaited product unveiling in Los Angeles.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
It’s the end of an era. Or maybe the start of a new one.
Microsoft — a company that traditionally has relied exclusively on its PC partners to provide hardware powered by its Windows operating system — is trying out a new business model with next Windows release.
The company is going to offer two Microsoft-branded tablets of its own, both of which are branded as Microsoft Surface.

Mystery solved: Microsoft’s new Surface tablet (pictures)

Microsoft isn’t actually manufacturing these new tablets itself — just as it doesn’t actually “make” the
Xbox or the now defunct
Zune media player. But it will be putting the Microsoft name on these devices. And this, many have speculated, will set up Microsoft as a head-to-head competitor with its own PC maker partners.
Pricing or any information on availability is not available yet. All officials are saying, via today’s press release, is that “suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC. OEMs will have cost and feature parity on Windows 8 and Windows RT.”
Both Windows RT, Microsoft’s Windows on ARM operating system, and Windows 8 are expected to be released to manufacturing this summer, possibly as early as the end of July. And they are expected by us Microsoft watchers to be generally available around August or so.
The Surface for Windows RT is a 10.6-inch device that will include Office Home & Student 2013 RT (the next version of Microsoft’s Office 15 apps). It will include support for a magnetically attachable cover that lets you touch type and a kickstand. It will be configurable as a 32 GB or 64 GB device.
The Surface Windows 8 Pro device also is 10.6 inches and includes the same cover option. It is configurable as a 64 GB or 128 GB device and also adds pen support.
In addition to pricing and availability, we also do not know who is building this device for Microsoft. (Samsung Electronics built the Surface 2.0 device, which is the latest version of Microsoft’s Surface tabletop computer.) We also do not know if Microsoft is going to have other Surface-branded devices in the family — including the existing Surface 2.0. (I’ve asked. No word back yet.)
Microsoft Surface.
The specs include:
  • A full-size USB port and a 16:9 aspect ratio angled at 22 degrees.
  • 10.6-inch, 16:9 widescreen HD Display.
  • Integrated Kickstand: Built-in kickstand lets users move Surface from active use to passive consumption.
  • Touch Cover: 3 mm pressure-sensitive Touch Cover senses keystrokes as gestures will come in different colors.

Panos Panay, general manager of Microsoft’s Surface project,
Microsoft came out with a couple of Surface models. One runs an ARM processor for Windows RT, the other an Intel core processing chip for Windows 8 Pro.

How To Move Your Business To The Cloud

Cloud computing has been the main buzz within the tech world over the past 5 years or so. And this is odd, considering “cloud” technology or “technology as a service” has existed since the mainframe days of the 1970s.
Simply put, cloud computing refers to computing which takes place on a remote computer which is not owned by you. (There are also “private clouds” which involve hosting many “virtualized machines” on your own hardware, but we won’t discuss that for today.)
However, a lot has changed since then.
  • In the past 40+ years, we’ve seen the emergence of desktop computing technology, widely available public networks, and the rise in mobile computing.
  • Our social attitudes towards technology have also changed in that time. Today’s young people are entering the workforce after having lived an entire life on the Internet.
And once again, we’ve come full-circle.
  • Business managers are looking to cut costs while also maximizing the flexibility of their operations. And one of the best ways to do that would be to take expensive servers out of the datacenter, and instead purchase computing resources as a utility. (The same way you purchase water or electricity)
  • Companies also want to spread out their organizations across a wider area in order to serve a broader client base… while at the same time eliminating the costs associated with purchasing, maintaining and repairing desktop computers.  Instead, they would rather allow employees to securely access corporate systems through their own home desktops, travelling laptops, and mobile phone devices. (Sometimes called BYOPC)
From a business management point of view, this has been the utopian vision of cloud computing. If your company has been exploring the possibilities of moving to the cloud, I’d like to outline a few tips that you might want to keep in mind.

Types Of Cloud Services
There are many types of cloud services and cloud topologies. But for this article, I’d just like to focus on the most common and most important.
SaaS (Software-as-a-Service)
Software as a Service is probably the most common way in which we use “the cloud”. Facebook, Gmail and DropBox are all examples of Software-as-a-Service.
With SaaS, you only get access to the program. You have no control over the computer which runs the program.
It’s often said that SaaS applications are “toys” which are only useful to small businesses (10 employees or less) and individual users. However, there are SaaS providers such as Salesforce.com which are known to support large multinational corporations with thousands of employees without a problem.
Although, in most cases, you will run into organizational scaling problems with many SaaS apps and will need to upgrade as your business grows.
The big advantage of SaaS is that you don’t need to invest in hardware or hire any new technical support staff to manage complex servers.
Hosted Services
With hosted services, you can rent a business-class enterprise server capable of handling a large number of employees while ensuring smooth collaboration, strict governance and tight security controls. However, these servers are managed by the cloud hosting provider, and you only rent the server on a monthly basis.
Some of the most common hosted services for growing and medium-sized companies include hosted SharePoint and Hosted Exchange.
These types of services are excellent because they allow businesses to host powerful enterprise applications without requiring any specially trained staff or purchasing new costly server hardware.
IaaS (Infrastructure As A Service)
The term Infrastructure-as-a-Service usually describes renting a “virtual server” in a remote host’s datacenter. You are usually getting a “bare metal” machine, which you will have to configure and manage yourself.
At this stage, you’ll usually need to hire a certified technical professional in order to manage your servers for you. You’ll also need to purchase software licences for any servers you’d like to create.
But the good news is that you won’t have to invest in infrastructure or hardware as you would if you’d decided to host these machines in your own office datacenter.
How To Pick A Host
Managed vs. Self-Service
Those of you who have web sites will know that web hosts generally come in 2 flavours.
  • The first kind would be the “managed services” providers who offer a high level of support and take care of all the technical details for you. These kind of hosting companies are usually more expensive.
  • The other variety are the low-cost web hosts which offer services for $10 per month or less. These providers generally offer self-service capability and expect their customers to be technically proficient when it comes to the management of their accounts.
A similar parallel can be drawn when it comes to cloud services. You can pay more money if you want 24/7 phone support from industry-certified professionals. Or you can save money by working with a host who expects you to take more of a DIY approach to resolving issues and only provides ticket-based email support.
Certifications
If you have any special requirements for your cloud hosting, you should find out before you make your choice.
For example, medical professionals in the USA are required to follow HIPAA rules when storing their data in the cloud. So it helps to work with a cloud host that has HIPAA-related experience or certifications.
Other types of certifications to look for might include Cisco, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, SAS70, PCI compliance, SOX404, VMware and many others.
Where Is The Data Stored
The location where the cloud servers are hosted could have an impact on your business.
A closer datacenter will have less network latency and fewer connection issues.
Also, your country may have privacy rules which conflict with those of other nations. If that’s the case, it may help to keep your data within domestic borders for legal purposes.
How Long Have They Been In Business
Cloud hosting can be a very “fad” business. New companies open and close all the time, so it helps to pick a provider which has been around for a few years and has achieved financial stability.
Hopefully, the tips outlined in this article have provided you with a good foundation for understanding and leveraging cloud computing to help your business succeed while also saving money. If you think I’ve left any unanswered questions, I’d encourage you to contact me directly or visit my blog where I’m constantly covering different areas of cloud computing.

Google Confirms Android Tablet Coming Soon

Google Confirms Android Tablet Coming Soon

According to NY Times report Google CEO Eric Schmidt has confirmed the Google tablet device which will run over Android operating system and the company is also experimenting in “stealth mode” with publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

Definitely to give a boost to Android OS Google must bring its own branded Android tablet in the market to compete with the rivals for example Apple iPad as HP is already working over Android Slate which is more smaller than Apple iPad in size of 6 inches diagonally.
So, if there will be more variety of tablets available in market that will be good for consumers to select a tablet computer of their choice with their preferred operating system.

This feature is already available in Google Wave, any ways its really nice and creative option to attach files in email message by drag and drop which will give users a new Gmail experience.

Samsung tries to tempt iPhone owners with iOS and iTunes data transfer utility

Samsung has recently launched Easy Phone Sync for Galaxy owners that want to bring data from their old iPhone over to their shiny new Android devices. The desktop application is supposed to be able to transfer music, videos, podcasts, pictures, contacts, and text messages to any Galaxy device, inclulding the latest SGS3. iTunes music has to be DRM-free in order to get transferred. Samsung UK's Simon Stranford said: .

http://master.imore.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=116963&action=edit&message=1
We’re really proud to announce the launch of this new application and can’t wait to hear what our new and existing customers think of it. We know that traditionally iPhone users have been reluctant to switch to an Android device because they couldn’t use iTunes to manage their content. Easy Phone Sync means people can now enjoy their iTunes content on a Samsung Galaxy phone. What’s more is that it’s really easy for them to do, and literally takes five minutes to set up.
To date, the primary tool to pull off iTunes syncing to Android was DoubleTwist, but there are plenty of alternatives out there, though few of them with a manufacturer's seal of approval. Samsung's solution is licensed from a company called Media Mushroom, who has previously released their sync solution for Android on their own. Predictably, many users are commenting on lack of compatibility, but keep reaching for that rainbow, guys. I'm sure it'll get patched someday. To be fair, the tool was launched in the UK, so there are likely to be some regional locks in place.
Anyone thinking of switching to Android any time soon? Is being locked in to iTunes actually stopping you from taking the leap? Anyone that already has a Galaxy can download the desktop tool here.

Few Tips To Be Secure While Paying Through Credit Card Online

Windows 8 Won't Feature The Native DVD Playback Capability !

Despite the drastically new Metro UI, Windows 8 has enjoyed mostly good reviews so far. But the latest revelation by Microsoft is not everybody would be happy about, the company has announced it's plans to do-away with natively bundled free DVD playback capability in Windows 8. The decision has been taken citing the sharp decline in usage of this media and the added licensing costs related to DVD playback, however, there would be an paid Media Center upgrade available for users willing to get the DVD playback support natively.

Understanding Different Types of Malware

You may have probably heard of the term malware, virus, trojan, keylogger, worm, backdoor, bot, rootkit, ransomware, adware, spyware and dialer but wonder what are the differences as you may probably only know about virus. Basically malware is short for Malicious Software where all of the terms above falls into this category because they are all malicious. The different term being used instead of just plain virus is to categorize what the malicious software is capable of doing. For example, a keylogger steals whatever that is typed on your keyboard and sends it to the hacker, a trojan opens up a backdoor allowing the hacker to gain full access to your computer and etc.
Using “virus” as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware is no longer accurate. The correct word to use should be malware. However don’t expect the big anti-virus companies to rebrand their products to Kaspersky Anti-Malware or Bitdefender Anti-Malware because doing that may risk losing their brand identity even if they actually a complete anti-malware solution. Here is a complete explanation on every malware terms.

Virus
A computer virus spreads on its own by smuggling its code into application software. The name is in analogy to its biological archetype. Not only does a computer virus spread many times and make the host software unusable, but also runs malicious routines.
Trojan horse/Trojan
A Trojan horse is a type of malware disguised as useful software. The aim is that the user executes the Trojan, which gives it full control of your PC and the possibility to use it for its own purposes. Most of times, more malware will be installed in your system, such as backdoors or key loggers.
Worm
Worms are malicious software that aim at spreading as fast as possible once your PC has been infected. Unlike viruses, it is not other programs that are used to spread the worms, but storage devices such as USB sticks, communication media such as e-mail or vulnerabilities in your OS. Their propagation slows down performance of PCs and networks, or direct malicious routines will be implemented.
Key loggers
Key loggers log any keyboard input without you even noticing, which enables pirates to get their hands on passwords or other important data such as online banking details.
Dialers
Dialers are relics from a time when modems or ISDN were still used to go online. They dialed expensive premium-rates numbers and thus caused your telephone bill to reach astronomic amounts, which meant enormous financial damage to you, the poor victim, who did not even know they were there. Dialers have no effect on ADSL or cable connections, which is why they are mostly considered extinct nowadays.
Backdoor / Bot
A backdoor is usually a piece of software implemented by the authors themselves that enables access to your PC or any kind of protected function of a computer program. Backdoors are often installed once Trojans have been executed, so whoever attacks your PC will gain direct access to your PC. The infected PC, also called “bot”, will become part of a bot net.
Exploit
Exploits are used to systematically exploit vulnerabilities of a computer program. Whoever attackes your PC will gain control of your PC or at least of parts of it.
Spyware
Spyware is software that spies on you, i.e. collects different user data from your PC without you even noticing.
Adware
Adware is derived from “advertisement”. Beside the actual function of the software, the user will see advertisements. Adware itself is not dangerous, but tons of displayed adverts are considered a nuisance and thus are detected by good anti-malware solutions.
Rootkit
A rootkit mostly consists of several parts that will grant unauthorized access to your PC. Plus, processes and program parts will be hidden. They can be installed, for instance, through an exploit or a Trojan.
Rogues / Scareware
Also know as “Rogue Anti-Spyware” or “Rogue Anti-Virus”, rogues pretend to be security software. Often, fake warnings are used to make you purchase the security software, which the pirates profit from.
Ransomware
“Ransom” is just what you think it is. Ransomware will encrypt personal user data or block your entire PC. Once you have paid the “ransom” through an anonymous service, your PC will be unblocked.
Although there are different categories of malware but most of the malware today combines different kinds of malware to achieve a higher rate of infection and giving more control to the hacker. Most malwares are invisible that runs silently without your knowledge to avoid detection except for a ransomware and adware. It doesn’t mean that you’re safe if you don’t see it so it is important to run an anti-virus software from reputable brands such as Kaspersky, ESET, Avast, Avira, AVG, MSE together with a second opinion anti-malware such as HitmanPro, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. As for Emsisoft Anti-Malware, it comes with its own Anti-Malware engine and Ikarus Anti-Virus Engine.

Hyper-V Free Hypervisor Hardware Virtualization (KB950050) Download for Windows Server 2008

Microsoft Hyper-V (codename Viridian) is a hypervisor based server virtualization or hardware virtualization software for x64 (64-bit) versions of Windows Server 2008. Formerly known as Windows Server Virtualization, Hyper-V is also available in standalone low-footprint version, Hyper-V Server without Windows Server components which costs as less as $28.

One may asks what’s the differences between Hyper-V with Virtual Server and Virtual PC, both also offered for free by Microsoft. The current Virtual Server 2005 R2 and Virtual PC 2007 SP1 is based on hosted virtualization platform, also known as Type 2 hypervisor that runs within an operating system, and thereby “guest” operating system in the virtual machine runs at the third level above the hardware. Hyper-V meanwhile is Type 1 native hypervisor that runs directly on a given hardware platform (as an operating system control program), and “guest” operating system thus runs at the second level above the hardware, allowing users to consolidate a vast array of workloads and move toward a dynamic IT environment.
A preview beta version of Hyper-V is shipped with x64 editions of Windows Server 2008. And now the RTM version of Hyper-V has been released by Microsoft. Hyper-V features new 64-bit micro-kernelized hypervisor architecture, supports 32-bit and 64-bit systems across different server platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and others, supports Symmetric Multiprocessors (SMP), includes new virtual switch capabilities to run with Windows Network Load Balancing (NLB) Service, comes with the new virtual service provider/virtual service client (VSP/VSC) architecture, and has ability to take snapshots of a running virtual machine to easily revert to a previous state.
The RTM update to the Hyper-V comes with KB950050 Update for Windows Server 2008. The KB 950050 update provides improvements to security, stability, performance, user experience, forward compatibility of configurations, and the programming model. Although Hyper-V is only available for x64 system, but the KB950050 with minimal components also applies to x86 (32-bit) Windows Server 2008 system.
The 32-bit Update for Windows Server 2008 (KB950050) package includes the release version of the following:
  • The Hyper-V Manager console
  • The Virtual Machine Connection tool for x86-based editions of Windows Server 2008
This 64-bit Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB950050) package includes the release version of the following:
  • Hyper-V technology
  • The Hyper-V Manager console
  • The Virtual Machine Connection tool for x64-based editions of Windows Server 2008
  • Integration Services for the following operating systems: Windows Server 2008 (x86-based and x64-based editions), Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) (x86-based and x64-based editions), Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 (SP4), Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) (x86-based and x64-based editions), Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) (x86-based editions), and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) (x86-based and x64-based editions)
The KB950050 RTM update for Hyper-V will be rolling out and delivered via Windows Update from July 8, 2008. For system administrators who want to update their system now, download update package setup installer from Microsoft Download Center.

Download KB977206 to Run Windows Virtual PC (XP Mode or VM) With No Hardware Virtualization

One of the original system requirement (part of Windows 7 system requirements) for Windows Virtual PC (and hence Windows XP Mode) is that CPU must support hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) and has the feature turned on or enabled in BIOS. The Windows Virtual PC (VPC) designed specifically for Windows 7, take advantage of HAV support on processor to improve the performance of virtualization technology (VT) when the virtual machines are powered on.

Some computer system with low-end or mid-range Intel and AMD CPU processor which does not support hardware-assisted virtualization (such as Intel VT-x, VT-d or AMD-V). Even if HAV is supported, some PC manufacturers and vendors have the function disabled, turned off and locked in BIOS level (Tip: How to check and verify hardware virtualization support on processor). As the result, user cannot start, configure or run any virtual machine including Windows XP Mode in Windows Virtual PC. One of the following error messages will be displayed instead:
Unable to start Windows Virtual PC because hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled
This error message indicates that the hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) feature is not enabled on the computer.
Cannot start Windows Virtual PC Host Process. Check the System event log for more details
This error message indicates that the processor does not support the HAV feature.
Windows Virtual PC cannot start because this computer does not support hardware-assisted virtualization
This error message is displayed when user tries to start or configure a virtual machine that is not running Windows XP Mode. This error message indicates that the processor does not support the HAV feature.
To make virtualization more accessible to many more PCs for small and midsize businesses wanting to migrate to Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise, while still running Windows XP-based productivity applications, Microsoft decides to remove the hardware virtualization technology prerequisite requirement in order to run Windows Virtual PC. It means that any PC with Windows 7, and with the hack for Windows 7 Home Premium, Home Basic and Starter to install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode), everybody can install and run Windows Virtual PC to power up any (virtual machine) on any computer and system.
To enable Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode on computer without hardware virtualization support, Microsoft releases KB977206 Update for Windows 7, which removes the prerequisites required to run Windows Virtual PC and XP mode. The prerequisites include a processor which supports hardware assisted virtualization (HAV) which is also enabled in the BIOS.
Note that if your current system already installed with and can run Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, the update is not required and not necessary. Windows Virtual PC will still take advantage of hardware virtualization support if it’s available. In fact, Microsoft says that while customers can start using Windows Virtual PC to run Windows XP Mode or create virtual machine running Windows Vista or Windows 7 without having to worry about hardware virtualization, HAV is still recommended for later case as the non-HAV is only supported and tuned for XP Mode.
Download KB977206 Update from Microsoft Download Center (32-bit or 64-bit). Windows Genuine Advantage validation is required, or else just download the setup installer for KB977206 from the direct download links below.
32-bit (x86): Windows6.1-KB977206-x86.msu
64-bit (x64): Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu
After installation, user may have to restart your computer.
There is no change to the code bits of Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. Check out the official direct download links for Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode.

Hardware-Assisted Virtualization (HAV) Detection Tool Free Download

More and more virtualization product or solution such as VMWare Workstation and Windows Virtual PC now requires Hardware Assisted Virtualization (HAV) CPU feature in order to function properly as allows a virtual machine hypervisor to run an unmodified operating system without incurring significant emulation performance penalties. The largest chip makers, Intel and AMD implement hardware assisted virtualization in their processors as Intel VT (VT-x) and AMD-V respectively. However, not all modern CPU has hardware-assisted virtualization capability built-in though.

For user who want to verify, check, determine or get to know whether his or her PC computer supports hardware-assisted virtualization, there is a software utility named SecurAble which able to display hardware virtualization support status as Yes, No, Locked On and Locked Off.
Microsoft has also released a application tool that able to detect status of Hardware-Assisted Virtualization (HAV) support on the computer system’s CPU microprocessor. Download HAV Detection Tool: havdetectiontool.exe
Using HAV Detection Tool is easy, just run the executable, and the results of whether hardware virtualization support is existed on the system or not (together with ability to install Windows Virtual PC) will be displayed on result dialog. It’s standalone program, thus no installation or uninstallation required.

How to Access Windows Virtual PC BIOS Setup Utility

The virtual machine created by Windows Virtual PC, the new version of virtualization software from Microsoft for Windows 7, may be simulated and run in within Windows itself, but that doesn’t mean it lacks features that an actual physical computer have. One such low level component of PC is BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), which does exist in virtual machine too. Much of the modern common BIOS settings can be viewed or changed in VM’s BIOS too, such as system time, system date, IDE configuration, Num-Lock on boot, power management (APM), ACPI, boot devices sequence, and supervisor/user password.

Windows Virtual PC is equipped with AMIBIOS. In fact, the predecessor Microsoft Virtual PC (VPC)‘s BIOS has been modified by hackers in order to perform OEM activation crack. However, in Windows Virtual PC, the access to BIOS Setup Utility has been somewhat skipped and bypassed, due to the new enhanced integration features, which provides devices and resources sharing between host and guest operating system, specifically advanced features such as auto logon to guest Windows OS, and auto publishing installed application shorts to host Windows 7 Start menu.

Thus, in order to access and go into Windows Virtual PC (WVP)’s virtual machine’s BIOS configuration screen, the trick is to disable and turn off the Integration Features temporarily. To do so, start the virtual machine which you want to access its BIOS. Click on Tools in the menu bar, and click on Disable Integration Features. Then, go to Action pull down menu and select Restart to reboot the virtual machine.
On initial boot up, the virtual machine will perform POST (power-on self-test) sequence with black background screen like most PC computer. At this point, press Del key in order to access BIOS Setup Utility user interface of the virtual machine.

Tip: The POST sequence passes pretty quickly, so do press Del key quickly on boot up. After accessing the BIOS, just click on “Enable Integration Features” on “Tools” pull down menu to re-enable the integration features.
